Description
Ali Abdul Jabar, otherwise known as AJ Pipes, is an artisan pipe-maker from Indonesia and one of the leading figures in the emerging Indonesian pipe-making scene. There is a clear Danish influence in Jabar’s pipes, which are often reminiscent of the work of icons such as Sixten Ivarsson, Bo Nordh, Lars Ivarsson, Jess Chonowitsch and Tom Eltang.
The brandy is a very traditional pipe shape, but one that would ultimately become synonymous in many minds with Denmark – particularly with pipe-makers that came to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s. It was here that the shape went from being suggestive of a brandy snifter, to one that represented or reproduced that form in the medium of briar. Take this brandy from Ali Jabar: like some of the pipes of Bent Nielsen (Benner), Kurt Balleby, or S. Bang, the bowl’s side profile being an uncanny mirror of that of a brandy glass, minus the latter’s stem and foot. The pipe’s aesthetic overall is a minimalist one, which works well when you have a shape that, in itself, is as enjoyable as this one. The pipe is also eminently pocket-friendly and just about lightweight enough to clench if you’re a veteran smoker.
