2022 Mark Tinsky Mocha 5 2 Star Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates [SOLD]

Description

American artisan Mark Tinsky first came to prominence as a pipe-maker during the late 1970s, when he and Curt Rollar founded the appropriately named American Pipe Smoking Co. Tinsky and Rollar’s partnership continued until 1990, when the pair split amicably, with Tinsky retaining ownership of the company. In the early 21st century, Mark Tinsky began to carve pipes under his own name, while continuing to use the American name for his expanded venture into pipe-making supplies for the next generation of master artisans.

After over four decades in the pipe-making business, Mark Tinsky is well and truly at the top of his game. This one, made in 2022, is a testament to that. It is a group 5, two star bent apple in the ‘Mocha’ series, that being for smooth pipes with a combination of a dark brown undercoat stain and a natural finish over the top. This finish is reserved for briar with excellent grain patterns, which this one has in spades. The straight grain around its bowl in particular is quite remarkable.

The condition is excellent. There’s a whisper of darkening on the inner back rim, but nothing significant. The collector who sent this to us through our trade-in program clearly took great care of it.
