Description

To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

To my knowledge, Dunhill first started using vulcanite army mounts in the 1980s. Back then, they were went under the name of Bell Spigot, as the vulcanite mounts were bell shaped. More recently, Dunhill began making vulcanite-mounted pipes in a style more traditional to the army mount, though these pipes have always been rare offerings among the make’s standard fixtures. This one, from 2019, is a vulcanite-mounted bulldog, dressed in Dunhill’s famed Shell Briar finish. I shouldn’t be surprised, but I do find that the jet-black vulcanite mount works remarkably well with the near-black stain of the briar.

The condition is excellent. The pipe looks to have been smoked very little. Having come to us from an estate through our trade-in program, the pipe includes its original box and sleeve.
