Description
Ashton is an English pipe brand created by William Ashton Taylor, a former Dunhill pipe-maker who left Dunhill in the 1980s to make pipes under his own name. Along with other pipe-makers such as Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall and Les Wood of Ferndown, Ashton emerged as part of a new wave of high end, hand made British pipes in the late 20th century.
Jimmy Craig is undoubtedly a great pipe-maker, but I’ll always have a soft spot for his predecessor and founder of Ashton pipes, Bill Taylor. This pipe, made by Taylor in 2001, is a great testament to his pipe-making abilities; the shape is an interesting deviation from the traditional saddle billiard, having a tall, stacked bowl, while the finish is a classic, craggy sandblast in Ashton’s burgundy Pebble Grain stain. A sterling silver collar adds an extra touch of class to the design.
This Ashton is completely unsmoked, having come to us as part of our consignment program. We must point out, however, that the briar and silver Ashton stem inlay had fallen out at some point, which we had replaced by Rich at Briarville. The inlay is therefore new, but the stem is original to the pipe. We have adjusted the pipe’s price accordingly.
