1996 Peterson Silver Mounted Army 68 Bent Brandy Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s shape “68” is an interesting one. It’s one that, as Mark Irwin has pointed out in a great blog post at Peterson Pipe Notes, changes significantly depending on the series it’s used in. In some versions, such as the Aran, it looks like a very traditional bent brandy. In others, like this Silver Mounted Army, it has an almost Danish plumpness to it, making it seem like a more suitable candidate for one of Peterson’s D shapes. In any case, aside from looking more plump than the average Pete, this one has some really excellent flame grain.

The condition is very good. There’s some rim darkening and a few spots of finish fading, but nothing to stop the pipe looking as great as it does.
