Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
Dunhill’s “LB,” or “large billiard” shapes are some of the make’s most popular and enduring offerings in English pipes. Introduced to Dunhill’s catalog after World War I and replaced in the mid-1970s, the pipes were, as the name indicates, larger pipes, being far stouter than the average Dunhill billiard. This particular rendition, from Dunhill’s renowned, oil-cured, 1960s era of production, is a “6LB,” indicating that it is a saddle-stem variant on the typically-tapered LB shape. Even with this added heft, it’s a beautiful, elegant pipe, with swirling flame grain patterns brought to the fore by Dunhill’s light, natural Root Briar finish.
The condition is good. There’s some rim darkening and a few spots of char on the top lip of the chamber, and the stamping is a little faded, but nevertheless it looks good and will smoke like a champ.
