Description
Neerup pipes were created by Peder Jeppesen, who began his career in the workshops of the legendary Danish pipe-makers Karl Erik Ottendahl and Erik Nording. Peder’s style has changed over the years, with his more recent work displaying a playfulness in design that is not often seen, even within the avant garde stylings of the Danish tradition.
For me, there are two things that define a Peder Jeppesen pipe, whether those made under his Neerup moniker, or the higher grade pieces made under his given name, as seen here: one is an organic composition, with typical shapes being apples, eggs, acorns, and strawberries; the other is the use of decorative elements, such as brighter color schemes, rings, and other adornments. As ever, this Ida grade Jeppesen does not disappoint. Taking the form of a plump apple, the pipe is dressed in a crisp sandblast finish and a contrast stain that rich to the point of being near-unrivaled as far as finishes go. The pipe’s ferrule accent is similarly attractive, this time cut from what looks to be amberoid of some variety. Whatever it is, it’s gorgeous.
On a side note, this pipe looks to have been made before the current “Ida Easy Cut” series, which is one step above the Neerup series. Originally, Jeppesen’s pipes were divided into Neerup (standard grade) and P. Jeppesen, with Ida (Jeppesen’s daughter) being his high end line.
The condition is excellent. Aside from some very minor inner rim darkening, it could almost pass for unsmoked.
