Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

Peterson’s System pipes can be roughly divided into three categories: there’s the System Standard, which features the titular reservoir system at the base of the shank to mitigate moisture build-up and gurgling; then there’s the Premier, which takes the System Standard designs and switches the latter’s nickel army mount for silver, while also using higher-grade briar; finally, there’s the Deluxe System which includes the same reservoir system as the Standard and Premier, but with upgrades over either, as well as some distinct design changes. Like the Premier, the Deluxe features a sterling silver army mount, but on the latter, this mount is flattened at the shank end, with a noticeable “gap” between the shank end and the base of the stem. This particular design element has become iconic within pipes, purportedly beginning its life as a “space-fitting” system that allowed the tenon to remain snug in the mortise after gradual wear. Whatever its origins, tenons are made from far sturdier materials these days, so the “gap” has remained as a skeuomorph testifying to Peterson’s innovative spirit.

The condition is good. The some rim darkening and a couple of small spots of char. The pipe also appears to be missing its original stinger, though its absence is unlikely have a significant effect on the pipe’s performance. The price has been adjusted in any case.
