Description
To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.
The LB (“large billiard”) was a shape first offered by Dunhill in the interwar years, and has since become an iconic Dunhill design and an archetype for what a good billiard might be. The LBS came shortly after, achieving a similar iconic, archetypal status within pipe-making. As the name implies, it is essentially an LB whose form has been “stretched” slightly so that the shank is slimmer and longer. This LBS is dressed in a similarly iconic finish, the Tanshell. While Tanshell pipes left the factory with a natural, almost virgin sandblasted finish, they would slowly develop a patina as they were used, achieving the kind of golden tan hue seen here.
The condition is good. Darkening and general wear to the rim, and a replacement tenon.
