Description
Comoy’s is a historic brand in pipe making, and possibly the most historic brand in the making of briar pipes. Though originally founded in 1825 by a French family from Saint Claude, France, production of Comoy’s pipes was soon moved to London, England, where it established itself as one of the quintessential English pipe companies.
The Comoy’s Highgate line was defined by its distinct, partially rusticated finish, done so in the form of geometric panels around the pipe’s bowl and shank. To my mind, it was one of the most unique pipes Comoy’s ever offered, especially when paired with their more unconventional shapes. The 599 seen here, for example, is a curious design, a short shape equal parts pear, Zulu, and panel. In my experience it is by no means a common shape, so having one turn up is always a nice surprise. Based on the stamping and the three-part C stem inlay, this will be a pre-1980 Comoy’s pipe, from before the Cadogan Investments merger early in that decade.
The condition is good. Some rim darkening and residual stem oxidation.
