Description
Over the last few decades, pipe makers have continued to rediscover alternative mediums to briar for their pipes—mediums that, often unjustly, fell by the wayside as tree heather root became the near-universal standard. Spearheaded by artisans, materials such as morta (bog oak) and olivewood have been welcomed back into the scene, as has one of tree heather’s close relatives: Arbutus Unedo. Commonly known as strawberry briar, the root of the strawberry tree has been utilized by artisans as diverse as Roman “Doc” Kovalev, Federico Becker, and Yorgos Mitakidis—and, of course, Chris Morgan. While Arbutus is similarly heat resistant to tree heather briar, it is singularly receptive to sandblasting, resulting in especially deep, craggy finishes. Like the Bones, the BlackJack, and the Briar Cigar, the Morgan Arbutus has been a smash hit since its debut many years ago, despite being produced in far more limited quantities.
