Description
Jarl pipes were made by Niels Mogens Jørgensen, a Danish pipe-maker in the 20th century. They were manufactured in Kolding, Denmark, not far from the factory of another great Danish company, Bari. While Jarl pipes are less well known than Bari or other contemporaries, their designs were as innovative and distinctly ‘Scandinavian’ or ‘Danish’ as others in that tradition, without losing their own style and originality.
Along with makes such as Danmore and Kriswill, Jarl pipes are a real overlooked gem in 20th century Danish pipe making. They’re also a nice reminder that, no matter how many distinct and interesting shapes Stanwell had, there were countless more to be discovered elsewhere. This Jarl is one example, having a tall, vase-like bowl, as well as a slender frame that ensures lightness and easy clenching. It also features a mixed finish, bringing together panels of smooth briar with a very Danish micro-rustication.
The condition is fair. Rim darkening and some finish fading.
