Description

Barling and Sons was originally founded in 1812 by Benjamin Barling and began as a family business making silver-adorned meerschaum pipes. In the early 20th century, however, the Barling family began to produce what the brand is today most famous for – expertly made briar pipes.

After being sold by the Barling family in the early 1960s, the Barling make had an oftentimes troubled history, changing hands and places of manufacture in several instances, and losing a lot of the magic of the first Barling pipes along the way (although smokers did get some fantastic African meerschaums out of these arrangements). When Kopp (formerly Kolhase & Kopp) bought the rights to the Barling name around 2020, there was some curiosity as to what precisely would become of Barling pipes. To its credit, Kopp has shown that it wants the Barling name to be associated with high quality smoking instruments once more, and this isn’t the first time that they’ve revitalized a historic make (they do also own Rattray’s, after all). This Admiral model from the contemporary Kopp production is a classic, large bent billiard in the Anglo-French mold, with lovely grain accentuated by a contrast stain, along with an engine-turned silver band—it is a Barling, after all.

This Barling is completely unsmoked. It is chambered for 9mm filters as standard but should accommodate an adapter of some variety if preferred.
