MBSD Meerschaum Deluxe Vase Block Meerschaum Pipe Briar-Mortise 9mm

Description

At MBSD we sell a lot of high-grade, high-quality pipes from various iconic makes, but the pipes we’re most proud of are our meerschaums. Right from the beginning, we wanted to offer the best smoking meers on the market, and to do this, we had them made with two distinct features. First, we made sure that they were made with block meerschaum that was carefully selected to be the most lightweight, pure, and porous available, meaning it would also color more quickly and evenly as it is smoked. Second, for our Deluxe meerschaums, we had the pipes made with a patented Briar-Mortise system that is closer to the stem connection on a briar pipe than a standard meerschaum. This is because, on our Deluxe models, the mortise is made from briar itself, while the tenons used are made from Delrin. This allows for more precision construction of the pipe’s draft hole, as well as a general extra durability and longevity.

Thanks to the recommendations of my new hire, I’ve been following developments in the Chinese artisan scene recently, and I’ve become quite enamored with their approach to “sitters,” i.e., self-standing pipe designs. Ping Zhan, for example, makes beautiful hybrid shape sitters, mixing elements of the cherrywood with the acorn or the Dublin. Zhang Guo Hui, a colleague and collaborator of Zhan’s, also makes really elegant sitters that almost look like ornate vases. So, as usual, I talked to my head carver in Eskişehir and asked him if he could bring something of these pipes to our meerschaums – with, of course, the stipulation that I always add when discussing the sources of new shapes: “Be inspired, but don’t copy.” This is one of the pipes that was the result of that inspiration.

This pipe is also chambered for 9mm filters, whether of the charcoal, meerschaum, or balsa variety.
