Rattrays Old Gowrie 1 Sandblasted Panel Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked, 9mm
Out of stock
Description
The House of Rattray was originally a tobacconist, opening in Perth, Scotland, in 1903, under the oversight of Charles Rattray. House of Rattray soon became a blending house (whose blends are still sold to this day under the Rattray’s name) and a purveyor of Rattray-brand pipes, made for the tobacconist by established English pipe makers. Over the years, the name changed hands, with contemporary Rattray’s pipes and tobaccos being produced under the umbrella of German’s Kopp company (formerly Kolhase & Kopp). Today, Rattray’s pipes are manufactured by various major European makers, such as Chacom and Butz-Choquin in France and Brebbia and L’anatra in Italy.
Named for the region in Scotland whose central city is Perth, where the House of Rattray was first located, Old Gowrie was originally a Rattray’s blend, rather than a pipe model. It’s a good blend, too, and I’ve gone through many a tin in my years. The Old Gowrie pipe, seen here, was a later addition to the Rattray’s catalog, featuring a crisp sandblast and a reserved, near-black stain. This particular Old Gowrie is a distinctive panel brandy shape, and one that isn’t too heavy, either. It may well make for a comfortable hanger.
The pipe is completely unsmoked and comes with its original box and sleeve. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters as standard.
