Description
In 1974, after growing impatient waiting for a pipe he’d ordered, Claudio Cavicchi decided he would simply make his own pipe instead. The former farmer from Bologna, Italy, spent the next 15 years making pipes, until his work took off and received widespread acclaim. Cavicchi’s pipe-making exploits have only become more renowned in the decades since, while his pipe-smoking exploits have earned him 1st place in numerous slow-smoking competitions.
I was first turned on to Cavicchi pipes by a late friend of mine, and ever since I’ve been completely enamored with them. Whether it’s his rusticated pipes, his sandblasts, his standard grades or, as in the case of this one, his high-grades (though, to be fair, they’re all high-grade), they really are immaculate. Of course, the high-grades are immaculate on a whole other level. This one is a large, plateau Dublin, with a silver collar and an ornamental gap in the stem join reminiscent of Peterson’s “space fitting” tenons on their Deluxe System pipes. It also has the kind of extraordinary straight grain that you’d ordinarily only find on, for example, a Larsen Pearl, or the absolute pinnacle of Charatan’s Lane era freehands.
The pipe is also completely unsmoked, and comes with its original sleeve.
