Description

A living legend in Danish pipe-making, Tonni Nielsen first began his career at the age of 16, at the historic W.O. Larsen workshop. Here he apprenticed under Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen and Teddy Knudsen, and within a few years, he was already carving Larsen’s high-grade Straight Grain pipes. After going solo and continuing his successes, Nielsen emigrated to Kentucky, in the United States, where he currently resides.

This pipe was a mystery to me for a long while, and as its a Tonni Nielsen, I didn’t want to list it without at least being able to provide some kind of information on it. It’s a little more reserved than I’m used to from Tonni (though beautifully shaped in the form of a scoop brandy hybrid, and mounted with boxwood), and it has a few extra, slightly faded stamps that I also haven’t seen on his pipes before. “DPS,” I thought, “what’s that?” Then it hit me. After all, where does Tonni reside these days? Down in the Deep South, in the good old US of A. And what kind of notable pipe associations are/were there down south? A few, actually, but most importantly, there was the Nashville Area Pipe Smokers. I’d wager this was made as a NAPS club pipe. Lucky them, eh?

The condition is fair. Rim darkening and some rim charring, and a little finish fading.
