Johny Pipes Smooth Reverse Calabash Volcano Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Out of stock

Description

Johny Pipes are made by artisan Meysam Jahani. While Jahani previously worked in a university, he ultimately left to take on pipe-making in a professional capacity. Jahani’s specialties are calabash shapes – some traditional, some more modern – through which he continues to explore and perfect designs that have been constant fixtures in the world of pipes for centuries.

The traditional calabash has a chamber that sits atop a hollow bowl, which allows smoke from the chamber to cool and dry a little before it reaches the draft hole which connects to the smokers’ mouth. More recently, however, artisans like Michail Revyaigin discovered that briar pipes could be made with wide and similarly hollow shanks, creating much the same effect. This was dubbed the “reverse calabash” and has become a common feature in handmade briar and meerschaum (including some of MBSD’s own) pipes. Here, the reverse calabash system has been incorporated into a Danish-American style volcano shape.

This pipe is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It comes with its original box. It is new old stock (NOS), having been originally carried by Dave Neeb’s Mkelaw Pipes before his retirement from pipe sales.
