Description

B. Barling and Sons was originally founded in 1812 by Benjamin Barling and began as a family business making silver-adorned meerschaum pipes. In the early 20th century, however, the Barling family began to produce what the brand is today most famous for – expertly made briar pipes.

The “Fossil” was the name adopted for sandblasted pipes during the later family era of Barling’s Make pipes. These distinctly craggy sandblasts would become one of the reasons for Barling’s renown, and would inspire countless carvers – perhaps most famously, America’s J.T. Cooke – to emulate such finishes. In this instance, the sandblast has been firmly applied against a majority bird’s-eye grain, creating a texture that evokes the terrains of distant moons and planets.

The condition is fair. Rim darkening, some finish fading, and a professionally-made, replacement vulcanite stem cut to mimic the original’s length and taper. The price has been adjusted accordingly.
