Description
Andrey Kharitonov is, to my eye, one of the most innovative artisans in pipe-making today. Born in 1961 in the former Soviet Union, Kharitonov’s work has been inspired by a number of his compatriots in the artisan scene, such as Victor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Alexey Kharmalov. Like the latter, Kharitonov frequently experiments with novel shapes, textures, and stains, creating pipes that are instantly recognizable as his making.
Alongside his highly distinct approach to pipe design, one thing that Andrey Kharitonov has become known for is his use of exotic materials to accent his works. Fossilized mammoth bones are a notable example, with Kharitonov using several thousand-year old tusks and teeth from Siberia in a variety of ways. This Danish-style egg complements its flame grain briar bowl with a ferrule cut from mammoth molar, which sits nicely between the pipe’s bowl and its lava-like swirling ebonite stem.
