Nording Extra Grade 1 Smooth Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description
Nørding was founded by Erik Nørding in the 1960s, and is one of the oldest remaining companies to come out of the Scandinavian pipe-making renaissance that began in the mid-20th century. Now in his 80s, Erik Nørding is one of the most experienced and skilled pipe-makers in the world, and over the decades he has also been a teacher of other Danish masters, such as Poul Ilsted, Svend Axel Celius, Jens Tao Nielsen, Peder Jeppesen, and Søren Erik Andersen.
As the name suggests, Nørding’s “Extra” pipes are freehands in the Danish fancy tradition (that Erik himself was pivotal in inaugurating), but with a little something extra. Or, a few things. One is grain, with the pipes showing off more consistent flame grain or straight grain patterns than the Freehand line. Extra pipes are graded according to this grain, like the Freehands, with “1” being the highest. Another thing the Extra pipes feature are accents fashioned from exotic hardwoods, bamboo, or tropical nuts. It is a stabilized form of the latter that appears to adorn this pipe. The final thing Extra pipes feature are more colorful stems than the standard Freehand, with this one featuring an ivory-hued, hand cut acrylic mouthpiece and an additional silver collar.
The condition is very good. Some inner rim darkening and slight handling marks.
