Description

After the success of our MBSD Deluxe meerschaum pipes, which feature a patented Briar-Mortise system for extra durability, we’ve been developing additional series to offer an even greater range of meers for our customers. One of these series is the Deluxe Silver, which features a mortise strengthened both by briar on the interior, and sterling silver on the exterior. These pipes might be thought of as army mount or spigot mount pipes (depending on the design), with even more of a guarantee to their longevity. Better still, these pipes are made from the same high-grade, fast-coloring meerschaum as our Deluxe and Silver series.

While many of our meerschaums emulate the designs of traditional and modern briar pipes, there is another kind of pipe that I’m partial to, but which I hadn’t thought to draw inspiration from until now. Those pipes would be the African meerschaums that were carved for a long time before all meerschaum mining in Africa ceased in the later 20th century. There was a very particular style to these meers, in part influenced by the qualities of the material. As African meerschaum was not as white as its Turkish counterpart, carvers would frequently stain the bowls of such pipes to give them a more appealing hue. The rim was also often given a dark brown or black stain, creating a fumed appearance. Regardless of the reasons for these decorative practices, I like the look of them very much. Since we can’t get any African meerschaum for our MBSD Meerschaum pipes, I thought the next best thing would be to have a go at recreating their distinct aesthetic using Turkish instead. With this one, an imitation horn acrylic stem has been fitted to the bowl’s silver army mount, giving it an even more classical style.
