Description

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

While today there is a whole series of Peterson pipes dedicated to Arthur Conan Doyle’s super sleuth, originally there was just one Sherlock Holmes design in the Peterson catalog. Created by master craftsman Paddy Larrigan in 1987, Peterson’s “Sherlock Holmes” commemorated the 100th anniversary of the publication of A Study in Scarlet. In subsequent years, the Sherlock Holmes range was expanded, with Larrigan’s centenary pipe simply becoming the “Original” shape. This Sherlock Holmes would be called an Original if it had been made today, or even if it had been made just a few years later, but it dates back to 1987, the first year of Peterson’s tribute. It is a calabash befitting the mythos that has come to surround Conan Doyle’s detective, with a sterling silver collar and a vulcanite stem. As it is an older Peterson, it features a lighter, more natural stain than most of the Sherlock Holmes series pipes made more recently. This is also a 9mm version, so I presume it was made for the European market.

The condition is very good. Minor inner rim darkening, small scratch on the rim, light handling marks.
