Description

Pipe Tristan is the name used by French artisan Tristan Lefebvre. Lefebvre is part of a new wave of up-and-coming hand made pipe carvers from the birthplace of briar, following in the footsteps of figures such as Alain Albuisson, Paul Lanier, and Pierre Morel Sr and Jr. Lefebvre credits a wide range of influences upon his pipe-making, such as modern greats from Italy and Denmark, such as Carlo Scotti’s Castello and Tom Eltang, as well as more unique sources of inspiration, such as the centuries-old hunting pipes native to Germany’s southern Bavarian region. As such, Tristan is equally at home crafting his own spin on the ’55,’ the hawbill, or the Danish Dublin as he is reviving the Ulmer Kloben – when he isn’t inventing his own shapes, that is.

The cutty is one of the earliest briar pipe shapes, in part because early briar carvers transposed an already-familiar design found in clay tavern pipes onto the new medium. It then held its place as a familiar briar staple until modern hand made pipes and their adventurous designs eclipsed it, along with many other traditional shapes. But, more recently, the shape underwent a revival, not least due to the functionalist creations of Danish legend Tom Eltang, along with those inspired by him, such as Mike Sebasian Bay, Johannes Rasmussen (Suhr) and—as mentioned in a previous listing—Tristan Lefebvre. Of course, Lefebvre has his own take on the classic shape, with this one being closer to early French designs in its basic figure and compact, lightweight proportions. It is also dressed in his signature Ammonite rustication, based on fossils of prehistoric sea creatures. The pipe wears a modest, charcoal-black finish and is completed by a matching black ebonite stem.
