Mastro Geppetto Rusticato Rusticated Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do.

I have said it before and I shall say it again: my favorite thing about Mastro Geppetto pipes is that they have given Ser Jacopo’s carvers the opportunity to explore styles of pipes that simply do not fit in with the established Ser Jacopo aesthetic. In the case of pipes like this one, that essentially means having Ser Jacopo pipes that are more in keeping with English or French traditions than modern Italian ones. This one, for example, is a classical saddle billiard—so classical, in fact, that it also incorporates a distinct feature from the briars of old: the “windshield.” “Windshield” pipes, like the version pioneered by Dunhill around 1905, feature slightly raised forward rim that will help keep the pipe from burning too hot in less agreeable weather. On the other hand, this pipe does feature one quintessential property of modern Italian pipes, that being the pebble-dash house rustication style of the Ser Jacopo workshop.

This Mastro Geppetto is also completely unsmoked, and comes with its original sleeve.
