Bari Squash 7842 Sandblasted Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, Danish Estates

Description

Bari was a pipe company founded in Kolding, Denmark, in 1950. Along with Stanwell, Bari was one of the first companies that started the Danish movement in pipe-making, offering innovative designs and propelling its founders and carvers into celebrity status within the pipe world. Bari’s founder was Viggo Nielsen, whose sons Kai Nielsen and Jørgen Nielsen joined him in working at Bari, along with other soon-to-be famous names such as Åge Bogelund. Though the Bari company is long gone, its legacy lives on in the artisan pipe scene as it exists today.

This is a relatively traditional Rhodesian from Kolding’s Bari Piber. But, being Danish, it does have some less traditional elements to its design that keeps it interesting and distinct. Bari’s Rhodesians were always a little softer and more fluid in design than the perfectly symmetrical iterations found in classic English and French pipes, and generally had a more organic, hand-turned look to them. There’s also the slightly angular design of this one, with the shank rising sharply from the bowl and a stem that only becomes parallel to the pipe’s rim at the end of the mouthpiece. This is partly because the stem is much shorter than traditional Rhodesian stems, which is a unique approach, but even if it wasn’t, there is something of a resemblance between shapes like this and the famous Pibe-Dan stack in their approach to form. On a last note, the pipe shows off some excellent, craggy ring grain sandblasting, which suits the dansk-Rhodesian design very well.
