Savinelli De Luxe Milano 320 KS Smooth Author Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
The De Luxe Milano is something of an older line in Savinelli’s catalog. It’s post-1970, due to the three-digit shape code, but it’s still very different to what we think of as a modern Savinelli. For example, the De Luxe Milano has a 3mm bore, rather than the 6 or 9mm bore which most Savinellis today have, in part because Savinelli wants their pipes be able to fit their balsa filters. Buts not just the internals that are a little different. The aesthetic of the De Luxe Milano, as was more generally the case with Savinelli’s older lines, is more reserved. It doesn’t have a colorful stem or some kind of decoration. It is simply a relatively lightly stained stummel and a black stem, just like the English and French pipes of old. This has the effect of putting the briar at center stage. And, in this instance, what remarkable briar! The flame grain around the bowl is just gorgeous an is complemented perfectly by the stem’s subdued hue. On a final note, De Luxe Milano stems are vulcanite, which Savinelli today tends to use less frequently. So, if you like Italian pipes but prefer ebonite over acrylic, this pipe might just be perfect for you.

The condition is great. Some very minor, inner rim darkening, but I’m quite surprised at how well preserved this Savinelli is – especially as the 320 shape is a real smoking machine, as the saying goes.
