Description
Andrey Kharitonov is, to my eye, one of the most innovative artisans in pipe-making today. Born in 1961 in the former Soviet Union, Kharitonov’s work has been inspired by a number of his compatriots in the artisan scene, such as Victor Yashtylov, Misha Revyagin, and Alexey Kharmalov. Like the latter, Kharitonov frequently experiments with novel shapes, textures, and stains, creating pipes that are instantly recognizable as his own.
I can’t tell you how excited I was to get a chance to stock Andrey Kharitonov’s pipes at MBSD. I’ve been following his work for a while on one particular pipe forum, and while his designs were always imaginative and distinct, it’s in the last few years that he’s truly come into his own. This pipe is particularly creative, to the point where I don’t think I have a category ready to hand to slot it under. From a distance, it might strike as similar to the elephant’s foot and sphinx shapes, but closer inspection of the bowl shows it to be far more maritime in aesthetic, like a ship’s bow cutting through the water. With this in mind, it should come as no surprise that Andrey christened this shape the “boat on bamboo.”
