Description

In the world of pipes, Tom Eltang needs no introduction. I will, however, give one anyway, if just as a reminder. Eltang made his first pipe from a Pipe-Dan hobby kit at the age of 11. At age 16, he apprenticed under the legendary Anne Julie, before moving on to work for Pibe-Dan three years later. Three years after that, Eltang began working for Stanwell. Through these formative experiences with major Danish pipe-making institutions, Eltang cultivated the skills and creativity that would see him emerge as one of the figureheads of Danish artisan pipe-making scene. In terms of influence, it is perhaps only Sixten Ivarsson who has had a comparable impact on the world of hand made pipes.

While a staple of traditional pipe-making in its own right, the cutty shape, along with the poker, is also a signature shape of the Danish master artisan Tom Eltang. But how so? To understand this, you must first understand that the design philosophy of functionalism – that the functional requirements of an object should determine its outward form – has been a profound influence on Eltang’s craft. To this end, his cutty shapes are stripped-down, portable, lightweight creations, with all of the perfect internals that should be expected from a master like Eltang. As is common for his functionalist shapes, this cutty wears Eltang’s signature deep, tactile rustication, almost reminiscent of a ring grain sandblast.

The condition is great. Some ring darkening.
