Description
Vauen stems from Germany’s oldest tobacco pipe manufacturing company, tracing its roots back to the founding partnership of Karl Ellenberger and Carl August Ziener in Nuremberg, 1848. Out of the Ellenberger-Ziener partnership soon came the Vauen make itself, which grew to become Germany’s largest and most enduring pipe brand – a title that it continues to hold to this day.
As with a few other Vauens that have landed on my desk recently, there’s something a little bit Danish about this pipe from the German make – so much so that I’m not entirely sure what shape to categorize it as. It’s broad, curvy, and highly organic, with a golden contrast stain and an exotic wood stem accent. I’m going to put it down as a bent Dublin, though it truly does blend elements of the Dublin, the Rhodesian, and even the Oom Paul in the most unique way. It even has an original, P-lip style stem, which is another curiosity to add to the pile (though Vauen, like Savinelli, has a long history of their own interpretations of such things).
This Vauen is completely unsmoked, with a factory-original bowl coating to help ease in its first smokes. It also comes with its original box and sleeve. As with most Vauen pipes, it is chambered for 9mm filters, such as Vauen’s own, or Savinelli’s balsa wood filters. Adapters can be purchased, however, which would allow the pipe to be smoked just as well without one.
