Mastro Geppetto by Ser Jacopo Sandblasted Scoop Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Description
Mastro Geppetto pipes are made by the Italian workshop brand Ser Jacopo. One could call them Ser Jacopo’s series of ‘affordable’ pipes, and while this would be correct purely from the standpoint of price, it wouldn’t be entirely fair to them in other regards. Geppetto pipes are hand made from the same high-grade briar as Ser Jacopo pipes, but the former do not use the plateau cuts that the latter does, which are more expensive; Geppetto pipes also tend to be simpler shapes, meaning they do not require the use of the highly technical flexible drilling machinery that Ser Jacopo’s wilder shapes do.
This particular Mastro Geppetto is an interesting shape. From the side, it looks a lot like a prince, especially given the classical aura its dress finish confers. But, upon closer inspection, it turns out this petit prince has an oval shank that begins as wide as the bowl it extends from, tapering gently as it makes its way toward its stem. I’m more inclined, then, to call this a scoop than a prince. In fact, it reminds me more than a little of Stanwell’s very old shape 47, from the 1950s.
This Mastro Geppetto is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating. It also comes with its original sleeve.
