Description
It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.
Savinelli’s Punto Oro has denoted some of the make’s high grade offerings since its earliest decades in pipe-making. The Mr G series is a little newer, and can be a little confusing without knowing the its background. First, who is the eponymous Mr G? That would be Giancarlo Savinelli, grandson of Savinelli’s founder Achille Savinelli, and the current president of the Savinelli company. While the Punto Oro series predated Giancarlo’s contributions, his preference for collars, rings, and other metalwork in pipe design led to the creation of the Punto Oro subseries bearing his initial. In other words, Punto Oro Mr G pipes are Punto Oro pipes with a little more flair than other pipes in the main series. This Mr G features a stem inlay comprised of two golden rings, sandwiching another one cut from briar. It is rendered in Savinelli’s interpretation of the classic lumberman shape, the 806. As with other Punto Oro pipes, this one has a stem cut from ebonite, rather than Savinelli’s more typical Lucite.
The condition is great. There’s a very small amount of darkening on the innermost lip of the pipe’s beveled rim, and what might be some minor fading to the finish on the bowl. The pipe is chambered for 6mm filters as standard, such as Savinelli’s balsa filters, but from experience, the pipes smoke just as well without one, if preferred.
