Description
Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

I find Chacom’s Trekking line – now long-since discontinued – quite curious. The name implies an outdoors theme, such as pipe one would take when rambling about the French countryside. But the pipes themselves are really nice – pipes that I, personally, would be afraid to take into the wilderness, fearing I might accidentally scuff the finish! But then, I do tend to ‘baby’ my pipes. This one is a plump, brandy shape, with a subdued, dark brown stain (one that nevertheless dresses some beautiful grain) and a decorative hardwood ring between the stem and shank.
The pipe is also completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating, as well as its original box and sleve. The pipe is chambered for 9mm filters, but comes with a specially fitted adapter from Chacom in case its owner prefers to use it without one.
