To veteran pipe smokers, Dunhill needs no introduction. Beginning in 1907, Alfred Dunhill began selling Dunhill pipes at the tobacconist shop he owned on London’s Duke Street. Very quickly, these pipes gained the reputation of being the ‘Rolls-Royce’ of pipes due to how expertly crafted they were. Today, Dunhill is likely Britain’s most famous pipe manufacturer, and continues to produce some of the most treasured pipes a smoker can buy.

The Lovat is one of the all-time classic pipe shapes in traditional pipe-making, having been produced by various makes for well over a century. The design is simple: a billiard-style bowl, a longer than average shank, and a shorter than average, saddle stem. This one, by Dunhill, features some excellent ring grain sandblasting and the make’s famed, near-black, Shell Briar stain. As is quite typical for Dunhills, this one is astoundingly lightweight, at just 24 grams. An easy clencher, no doubt.

The condition is good. There’s some darkening and light char on the inner rim, and a little bit of finish fading on that rim, but nothing I would call major.
