Van Roy Magic Cake Smooth Dublin Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked
Out of stock
Description
This pipe is an interesting one. From looking at Pipedia, it appears that Van Roy was a mid-20th century pipe make, as well as the originator of the Adjustomatic tenon system. If you’re wondering where you’ve heard the name “Adjustomatic” before, that’s because, years later the system would more famously be used for Dr Grabow pipes. If you don’t know what an “Adjustomatic” is, it’s basically a screw-in tenon that keeps the stem aligned so that the mouthpiece is perfectly horizontal at all times.
What about “Magic Cake”? That I’m less sure about, but given the pipe’s age, I’d wager that it’s some kind of bowl coating to help the pipe break-in process – just like Yello-Bole, or the much later Miele series from Savinelli.
The pipe is a very traditional, no-nonsense Dublin. A real mid-century classic. It’s also completely unsmoked, which is pretty remarkable for a 70 or so year-old pipe. Even more remarkable is that it comes with its original box.
