Description

It is probably fair to say that Savinelli is Italy’s most famous pipe brand. Founded in Milan in 1876 by Achille Savinelli, the brand has continuously offered high quality pipes for nearly 150 years. Though various Savinelli lines have come and gone over the years, the brand has always been notable for putting out classically styled pipes with a distinctly Italian twist.

Having done some research, it looks as though the Savinelli Pietro series was one manufactured at least a few years back, and is one that has not been in production for a similarly long time. Why? It’s always hard to know. The design looks good to me. It’s very reserved, with a dark brown stain over a rusticated finish, paired with a simple, black stem and a band of what looks to be imitation horn or ivory. In a way, it reminds me a little of Dunhill’s mid-century opera pipes, which used the real thing. This Pietro is rendered in Savinelli’s ever-popular “320KS” shape, an author shape that is particularly well suited for English blends and other ribbon and mixture cuts.

The condition is good. The finish around the bowl has faded a little – likely as a simple consequence of being cradled the hand during long, relaxing smokes – but this is purely cosmetic. The pipe will assuredly smoke just as well as the day it was made. As with many Savinelli pipes, the pipe is chambered for 6mm filters, such as Savinelli’s own balsa filters, but it will smoke just as well without one.
