Adam Davidson Sandblasted Pickaxe Handmade Estate Briar Pipe, American Estates [SOLD]

Description

A graduate of industrial design and of a less formal apprenticeship under Todd Johnson, Adam Davidson has become one of North America’s most renowned artisan pipe-makers. Davidson initially worked with Johnson on his Medici pipes, while also being employed as a refurbisher for one of America’s leading pipe dealers. He then went solo, soon rising among the ranks of the American handmade pipe scene until he arrived at a stature comparable to contemporaries such as Johnson and Jeff ‘J. Alan’ Gracik.

Blending Danish and Japanese influences in his own, unique way, this bamboo-pickaxe from Adam Davison is really something to behold – and indeed to hold, which I will get to in a moment. The bowl is a perfectly executed, ring grain sandblast that also manages to bring out the bird’s-eye grain on its rim in an uncommonly beautiful manner. To this, Davidson has added a long, three-knuckle bamboo shank extension, whose proportional relation to the bowl recalls early currents in Danish design (e.g., the post-war pipes of Sixten Ivarsson). Returning to the topic of ‘holding’: the pipe is incredibly lightweight, at just 24 grams. It should therefore be a comfortable clencher for just about anyone.

The condition is near-mint. This pipe came to us from the estate of a high-end collector, through our trade-in program. Having seen some of his other pipes that came to us, it is evident that he took great care of them.
