Jacono Knight 2012 Rusticated Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked [SOLD]

Description

Having a high-end briar cutter for a father-in-law, along with a pipe-maker for a brother-in-law Tonini Jacono began making pipes, in collaboration with his two extended family members, in 1981. In 1983, he started his own pipe workshop in Marche, Italy, founding the Jacono brand. After over four decades in the craft, Tonini continues to create high-grade pipes in the Italian style.

This is a very interesting pipe from Tonini Jacono. The most interesting aspect of it, for me at least, is the rustication. Jacono’s contemporary Knight finish is one very much in the Italian tradition of granular, pebble-dash rustication, as one also finds (albeit with idiosyncrasies respective to the make) in Castello’s Sea Rock or Caminetto’s Business finishes. But this Jacono is different, both to many other Italian makes, and to other Jacono pipes from the same series. The rustication is what might be called pick-work, as one finds in architecture, rather than pebble-dash; it has a depth to it due to the subtle combination of hand-carved pores in between an otherwise smooth polished finish on the bowl. Relative to the other great Italian workshop makes, it’s quite unique. The other interesting aspect of the pipe is its form, being a quarter-bent chubby apple/pot with a shank that becomes more oval-shaped as it progresses toward a short, Lucite stem.

The final distinction this pipe holds is that it is completely unsmoked, having come from a large estate of Italian high-grades via our trade-in program.
