Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

While the Peterson make needs no introduction, this particular Peterson certainly warrants one. First of all, the shape: if you’ve never played golf, you’ll probably be wondering what on earth this Pete is supposed to be. If you have, on the other hand, you’ll probably recognize it as being modeled after a golf club, specifically, a driver. And that’s because it is. It is a Peterson pipe, hand carved in the shape of a golf driver, and released in the 1990s as part of a very limited series. I remember reading Mark Irwin, of Peterson Pipe Notes, refer to these pipes as a “holy grail” of sorts for Peterson collectors. I also think I remember reading that these pipes were made by Paddy Larrigan, Peterson’s master carver, though I haven’t been able to confirm this. Oh, and the collar on this one is 9 carat gold, because of course it is.

The condition is great. There’s a little darkening on the back lip of the rim, and what could be a small nick on the rear bowl exterior (it could also be a natural briar imperfection, I’m not entirely sure). In any case, I doubt this will put off Peterson collectors too much from this “holy grail” pipe.
