Peterson Pipe of the Year 2019, Rusticated Bulldog Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates [SOLD]

Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.

I’ll admit I had to consult Mark Irwin’s always excellent Peterson Pipe Notes on this one. I’m familiar with their shape ‘999,’ which I first thought this one was, but PPP educated me on a very important difference between this 2019 POY and that particular shape. That’s because the POY 2019 wasn’t a shape 999 at all, but the extra large shape XL661, and a recreation of Peterson’s original 1937 Rhodesian, nicknamed the ‘John Bull.’ This one is rusticated in what appears to be the contemporary Donegal Rocky finish.

The condition is great. There’s a small amount of darkening on the beveled, inner lip of the rim, and for some reason the year itself in the Pipe of the Year nomenclature appears to be missing, or has been buffed off (the rest remains), but I wouldn’t call these significant issues in the slightest.
