Ser Jacopo S1 Sandblasted Bent Apple Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Ser Jacopo is likely the most famous contemporary example of high-grade, workshop-made Italian pipes. It also belongs to a very special tradition in Italian pipe-making, having been established by Giancarlo Guidi and Bruno Sordini after the two had left another great Italian workshop, Mastro de Paja. Together, Guidi and Sordini created a brand of pipes that reflected their Renaissance sensibilities – even the figurehead of Ser Jacopo happens to be taken from a painting of a nobleman from centuries past – one that would soon become esteemed for creating unique and beautiful tobacco pipes that smoked just as well as they looked.

Ser Jacopo’s ‘S1’ stamp normally designates a black sandblasted finish, though in recent years the make has taken a different approach to this staple than most others. Somewhat American artisan Mark Tinsky’s ‘Black and Tan’ pipes, Ser Jacopo will occasionally mix their loamy sandblast with patches of briar left in a blonde, almost virgin stain. As can be seen, this creates a striking contrasting effect, with the alternating finishes accentuating each other’s aesthetic properties It’s a powerful reminder that one can cut lines into a figure without the need of bands or other ornaments – sometimes the briar itself will do the job even better.

This Ser Jacopo is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating to help ease the break-in process. Having come to us through our trade-in program from a collector of Italian pipes, it has also retained its original box and sleeve.
