Don Carlos Rusticated Bent Rhodesian Estate Briar Pipe, Italian Estates

Description

Don Carlos belongs to a historic lineage within Italian pipe making. The workshop was founded by Bruto Sordini (along with his wife Rosaria), who had previously made pipes for Mastro de Paja, where he also met Giancarlo Guidi. In 1981, Sordini and Guidi left Mastro de Paja to found their own workshop, Ser Jacopo. After years of making pipes at Ser Jacopo, Sordini once again departed to found a new venture, as he had ideas for shapes and styles that were quite different to Ser Jacopo’s established design philosophy. Sordini therefore created Don Carlos as a means of expressing this vision, resulting in pipes that are both quintessentially Italian, and bearing aesthetic that is wholly their own.

If you’ve been following the MBSD news, you’ll know that we recently agreed to take on the selling responsibilities for Mkelaw Pipes, following Dave Neeb’s retirement from the business. This is one of the many pipes that came to us from Dave. It’s a beautiful, quarter-bent Rhodesian from Bruto Sordini’s Don Carlos make, with a pebble-dash rustication that is now about as Italian as pasta and pesto. It’s a large, rather imposing, pipe, but one that still retains a distinct elegance in the subtle lines that compose its form.

The condition is very good. The stem is a professional replacement, and the price has been adjusted to reflect this, but the bowl is as dark and craggy as it ever was.
