Description

W.O. Larsen was a tobacconist in Copenhagen Denmark. In the 1960s, when Danish-style pipes were becoming highly sought after, thanks to revolutionary pipe-makers such as Sixten Ivarsson, a workshop was set up on the Larsen premises to produce enough high-grade Danish pipes to meet demand. This workshop was staffed by the emerging masters of Danish pipe-making, such as Sven and Teddy Knudsen, Hans ‘Former’ Nielsen, Jess Chonowitsch, Poul Ilsted, and Benni Jorgensen.

The egg is a shape that will forever be associated with Danish pipe-making. Though it has become a staple among artisans (and some companies) the world over, it was, after all, the Danes that made it what it is today. And, if you want to find the Danes that brought the egg to the pipe-making fore, W.O. Larsen wouldn’t be a bad place to start. After all, so many of the celebrated carvers that pioneered the shape were, at one time or another, employed at Larsen’s Copenhagen workshop – the aforementioned Former and Jess Chonowitsch being prime examples. This Larsen is an eminently Danish egg, with a tall, ovular bowl, an oval shank that widens as it makes its way toward the shank end, and a distinct, “pinched” saddle stem.

The condition is very good. There’s a little inner rim darkening and some residual oxidation on the pipe’s ebonite stem, but these are purely cosmetic signs of a pipe well loved.
