A graduate of industrial design and of a less formal apprenticeship under Todd Johnson, Adam Davidson has become one of North America’s most renowned artisan pipe-makers. Davidson initially worked with Johnson on his Medici pipes, while also being employed as a refurbisher for one of America’s leading pipe dealers. He then went solo, soon rising among the ranks of the American handmade pipe scene until he arrived at a stature comparable to contemporaries such as Johnson and Jeff ‘J. Alan’ Gracik.

For all of its apparent simplicity, bamboo is not an easy material to make pipes with. If you were around during the advent of pipe-making forums online, you’ll know that drilling, bending, and stabilizing bamboo are perennial difficulties that pipe-makers raise among themselves in order to find a work-through. But, if you’ve followed Adam Davidson’s career as a pipe-maker, you’ll also know that, owing to his work on the Medici pipes under the direction of Todd Johnson, Davidson was “thrown in at the deep end” when it came to using challenging materials, including bamboo. This pipe was carved in 2017 by Adam Davidson, around a decade after his career as part of the Medici make. And that decade’s worth of practice and personal development is plainly evident, not only in the bamboo shank extension – which is perfectly neat and remains pristine – but also in the transition of that extension into the bowl and shank end, which have been shaped so as to follow the natural grooves of the bamboo. The overall design is a [visually] uncomplicated apple shape, whose squat bowl proportions border on princely. It has been finished with a crisp sandblast and an ever so slightly contrast stained, natural tan stain.

This Adam Davidson is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating by Davidson to help steady its first voyages.
