Peterson Silver Mounted Army 101 Smooth Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Irish Estates [SOLD]

Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
Peterson has been silver mounting their pipes since the 19th century, and may well be one of the reasons that doing so became so popular. This particular pipe is a very traditional Peterson design, being a quite simple, sterling silver army mount billiard. As one of Peterson’s more premium series, the Silver Mounted Army pipes use stummels with excellent grain, which this one certainly has. Its chestnut stain highlights a bowl covered in bird’s-eye grain patterns, which resonate with the sheen of its silverwork and jet black stem.
The condition is very good. The rim has some darkening and finish fading, but these won’t impact the pipe’s smoking properties. Nor do they significantly detract from its aesthetic properties, I’d say.
