Peder Jeppesen Ida 5 Smooth Freehand Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Peder Christian Jeppesen is an artisan pipe-maker from Denmark. Beginning his career in the workshops of Karl Erik and Erik Nording, he later began a solo career under his own name, as well as under the ‘Neerup’ Moniker. In the years since, Jeppesen has come to be recognized as one of Denmark’s premium carvers, including through his partnerships with Erik Stokkebye and the 4th Generation brand.

In recent years, Peder Jeppesen has divided his labors between numerous pipe project, with two of the main ones being his ‘Neerup’ pipes and his ‘Peder Jeppesen’ pipes. Both show off Jeppesen’s playful, and often more colorful, approach to pipe-making, with the latter representing his highest-grade work. This is one such pipe, from the Ida series, named after his daughter. It is a Danish ‘freehand’ pipe, yet its form also inclines towards the Italian ‘fan’ shape. Like the fan, the pipe has been cut from the outer burl of a briar root, where the briar’s straight grain spreads out in a fan pattern before erupting into a knotty plateau; unlike the fan, however, this pipe has been cut more ergonomically, allowing it to fit more comfortably in the hand, and to sit upright when one needs it to. The pipe’s rim is one long, snaking plane of plateau that proceeds uninterrupted to its mortise. Here a swirling acrylic stem sits – a final hallmark of Jeppesen’s style.

This Jeppesen is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from Peder’s workshop.
