Description

A graduate of Italy’s prestigious Academia della Pipa, Michele Sottocasa has been making pipes for over a decade under the la Biota name. Prior to becoming a pipe-maker, Sottocasa trained and worked as a designer and art director, and la Biota pipes continue this drive towards a distinct aesthetic vision. The name, ‘la Biota,’ originally derives from ecology, and symbolizes the deep connection between humans and nature – a connection well represented by the hand-made tobacco pipe.

I’m particularly fond of the la Biota ‘axe’ pipes. While ‘axe’ and the ‘pickacke’ shapes take their name from artifacts they resemble, as opposed to shapes such as the ‘apple’ and ‘egg,’ which take their names from the natural world, there is nevertheless a genuine organic quality to this pipe. It is masterfully made, while retaining a stripped down, rustic feel. Like most of Sottocasas’s pipes, it is also incredibly lightweight, at just 32 grams, making it an easy clencher – especially with its hand-cut woodland camouflage ebonite stem.
