Chacom Tradition 93 Smooth Straight Billiard Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked

Chacom is one of France’s most historic and iconic makes. Its founders, the Comoy family, began their career as boxwood pipe-makers in the early 1800s, before briar had even been discovered, with Henri Comoy (of Comoy’s fame) emigrating to England in 1879 and founding the country’s first briar pipe factory. In 1922, Henri and his nephews, the Chapuis, founded the Chapuis Comoy pipe factory in Saint-Claude, France, which shortly after began producing pipes bearing the partnered families’ names – ‘Cha’ for Chapuis, and ‘Com’ for Comoy. Chacom has been the biggest name in French pipes ever since.

The ‘Tradition’ is a line most commonly associated with the Comoy’s make, but it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Chacom had their own, at one time. This is not only because Chacom is a very traditional make – now being over a century old – but because Chacom and Comoy’s are essentially cousins. We might say that the ‘Tradition’ belongs to their shared DNA. Extended metaphors aside, Chacom’s Tradition, now long-discontinued, is a worthy companion to the Comoy’s version. This one is a slender, traditional billiard, carved from excellent briar and dressed in a light, strawberry-blonde stain that highlights the bird’s-eye and cross grain patterns underneath. The pipe is also extremely lightweight, at just 32 grams, making it an ideal clencher.

The pipe is unsmoked and comes with its original box and sleeve. Like many Chacom pipes, it comes with a stinger as standard, but this stinger is threaded so that it may easily be removed if the next owner prefers to use the pipe without it.
