Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
The Kenmare is a fairly uncommon pipe from Peterson. In fact, I’m not sure it’s produced anymore. From my research, I was able to find that it was introduced in the mid-2010s, but there isn’t much written about it after that. But, as with almost all pipe companies, plenty series come and go, sadly. What I was able to find about the series is that it was produced to celebrate the most popular shapes in Peterson’s catalog – such as this shape 150 bulldog – in a minimalist fashion, with jet-black vulcanite stems and a simple, light, red-brown stain. This stain was also chosen to allow the briar’s natural grain patterns to shine through, which they certainly do on this one. The cross-grain and bird’s-eye patterns, especially, are gorgeous.
The condition is excellent. There’s perhaps a little bit of rim darkening, or finish fading from cleaning that up, but it’s very minor. The pipe is very well preserved, which is great for such a rare offering.
