Description
Peterson pipes generally need no introduction, but just in case you’re unfamiliar: in 1876, a Latvian named Charles Peterson immigrated to Ireland and was hired making pipes in a workshop owned by Frederick and George Kapp. After rising through the ranks to become head craftsman, Peterson bought into the Kapp’s business, which was renamed, Kapp & Peterson (K&P). During this time, Peterson himself applied for several patents for pipe designs, including the world-famous Peterson’s System. Since then, Peterson has become one of the most recognizable names in pipe smoking and continues to produce high quality pipes from their headquarters in Dublin.
I was a little bit stumped by this one. I like to think I know Peterson pipes pretty well, but this one asked me a question that I didn’t immediately know the answer to. It’s a distinct shape – I knew immediately that it was one of Peterson’s rare and coveted ‘B’ shapes – and it’s a Pipe of the Year, as evinced by the stamping and the special, decorative silver band. But which year is it? Curiously, the stamping doesn’t say. So, I had to go back and look through over twenty-five years of Peterson Pipes of the Year, until I found it – 2013. Now, the question was, ‘but which ‘B’ shape is this? I had to be thorough, after all, so I went through them. Turns out it’s the 62nd ‘B’ shape, the B62. Whew, the things I do for you guys.
It’s a lovely pipe, a very plump and full, bent brandy, with a silver collar bearing Charles Peterson’s image. It’s also got some really beautiful, ring grain sandblasting.
The condition is just about spotless. Pre-smoked, but barely, or done so with the utmost care.
